Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has officially been unveiled as Ambassador for Ghana’s National Teams and Colts Football by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a ceremony held in Accra on Wednesday night.

The event, staged at the Pelican Hotel, celebrated Gyan’s contribution to Ghana football while marking the beginning of a new chapter for the former Black Stars captain ahead of the country’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Kurt Okraku Praises Asamoah Gyan’s Legacy

Speaking at the ceremony, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku paid tribute to Gyan’s impact on Ghana football, describing him as one of the country’s greatest sporting icons.

“For nearly two decades, he carried the hopes, dreams, expectations and emotions of millions of Ghanaians on his shoulders,” Simeon-Okraku said.

The GFA President highlighted the legend’s achievements for the Black Stars, including his record as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals and Africa’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

Simeon-Okraku also reflected on Gyan’s memorable performances at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, praising his resilience and leadership throughout his international career.

Asamoah Gyan Reflects on Emotional Football Journey

An emotional Gyan struggled to hold back tears as he addressed guests at the ceremony, expressing gratitude to the Football Association for the recognition and opportunity to continue serving Ghana football.

“I am truly honoured by this recognition,” Gyan said.
“Ghana football has given me everything, and I will continue to serve this country with passion and dedication.”

The former Al Ain forward described his football journey as one built on discipline, sacrifice, and commitment to national service.

He also pledged to use his ambassadorial role to inspire young footballers and support the growth of grassroots football across the country.

Asamoah Gyan Calls for Grassroots Football Investment

He used the occasion to appeal to corporate Ghana to invest more heavily in youth and grassroots football development.

According to him, many talented young players across the country lack the opportunities and support needed to fully develop their potential.

“Grassroots football is the foundation of every successful football nation,” he stated.
“We must invest in young talents, create opportunities for them, and give them hope.”

His comments reinforced the growing conversation around long-term football development and talent nurturing in Ghana.

Gyan Honours Mentors and Former Teammates

One of the emotional highlights of the evening came when Gyan presented symbolic Black Stars jerseys to individuals who played key roles in his career development.

Among those honoured were former teammates Stephen Appiah, Prince Tagoe, Emmanuel Agyeman-Badu, and Tony Baffoe. Gyan also paid tribute to veteran coach J. E. Sarpong, whom he credited for helping shape his early football journey at Accra Academy.

The gesture drew applause from guests and added a personal dimension to the ceremony.

With Ghana preparing for another World Cup campaign in 2026, the GFA believes Gyan’s appointment can help unite supporters and inspire a new generation of players.

Widely known as “Baby Jet,” Gyan remains one of the most influential figures in African football history, having represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups.

Although his playing days are over, his involvement with Ghana football continues, this time as a bridge between the Black Stars’ proud history and their future ambitions.
