Growing up playing soccer and spending two years at Sacred Heart College in Auckland, Cleary converted to rugby league in his early teens, playing at the junior level for the Mount Albert Lions in Auckland and the Penrith Brothers in Sydney.

In 2015, while a student at St Dominic’s College in Penrith and a prefect, he finished his HSC.

Nathan Cleary career

Cleary advanced through the youth ranks of the Penrith club, participating in their S. G. Ball Cup (under 18) and Harold Matthews Cup (under 16) squads, the latter of which he captained in 2015.

Prior to being called up to Penrith’s National Youth Competition (under 20) squad in the middle of the season, Cleary participated in a few games for the Windsor Wolves in the Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield.

Due to his selection in the Australian Schoolboys team, which he captained during their two-match series against New Zealand under-18s, Cleary was unable to play in Penrith’s 2015 NYC Grand Final winning team.

In his U20s career from 2015 to 2016, Cleary played 20 games, scored 11 tries, and kicked 109 goals for a total of 262 points.

Cleary was chosen to play for the Junior Kangaroos against the Junior Kiwis in May. He played at five-eighth, scoring a try and booting five goals in the 34-20 victory. Cleary began the season as Penrith’s first-choice halfback in the NYC.

In round eleven of the 2016 New South Wales Cup, his first match for the Penrith club, he made his tournament debut.

The Penrith team for the 2017 NRL Auckland Nines included Cleary. In order to participate in the last City versus. Country match, Cleary was selected for the NSW City Origin representative team on May 1.

With a total of 228 points, Cleary concluded the season as the NRL’s top scorer and was the youngest player to do so since 1913.

He participated in each of the club’s 26 games, scoring 11 tries and kicking 92 goals. In addition, Cleary set a record for the youngest player to ever reach 200 points in a season.

Before suffering a knee injury in Penrith’s 20-18 loss to Canterbury-Bankstown in Round 3 at ANZ Stadium, Cleary had perhaps the best start to the 2018 NRL season. Cleary was still in the lead for the halfback position for New South Wales when he was out with the injury.

In the first few rounds of the 2019 season, Cleary had received criticism from certain fans and members of the media for Penrith’s lackluster performance.

At Brookvale Oval, Cleary led Penrith to a 42-12 victory over Manly in round 12 with one try and seven goals.

Cleary contributed to Penrith’s 29-28 victory over the Sydney Roosters by scoring a hat-trick and kicking a field goal in the 2020 qualifying final.

In Penrith’s 48-12 victory over the Gold Coast in round 10, Cleary not only scored a hat-trick but also kicked eight goals. He scored two tries and kicked 10 goals in Penrith’s 56-12 victory over South Sydney the following week.

On May 29, Cleary was chosen by New South Wales to participate in the opening State of Origin match of the 2022 season. In Penrith’s 42-6 victory over Newcastle in round 14 of the 2022 NRL season, Cleary scored a try and kicked seven goals

In the 2023 World Club Challenge, Cleary participated in Penrith’s shocking 13–12 loss to St Helens RFC.

In the last seconds of the fourth round of the 2023 NRL season, Cleary kicked a two-point field goal from 40 meters away to tie Penrith and Parramatta at 16-16.
