Harris was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland, in December 1964. Washington, DC’s The Field School was where he studied. In 1986, Harris earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and graduated summa cum laude. He competed in collegiate wrestling for the Penn Quakers as well
Harris spent two years working at Drexel Burnham Lambert’s mergers and acquisitions division after earning a degree from Wharton. As a Baker Scholar and Loeb Finance Fellow, he later enrolled in Harvard Business School, from which he earned an MBA in 1990.
With Leon Black and Marc Rowan, he co-founded Apollo Global Management. Harris resigned from Apollo’s day-to-day operations in May 2021 and departed the firm in January 2022, owing to his concentration on his interests in sports clubs and a conflict that involved litigation with Apollo co-founder Leon Black.
Josh Harris is on the boards of the Wharton School of Business, the Harvard Business School, and the Mount Sinai Hospital. He also previously served on the boards of the United States Olympic Committee and Berry Global. He’s also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Investor Advisory Committee on Financial Markets (IACFM) of the New York Federal Reserve.
