Former Ghana Football Association Vice President George Afriyie has made it clear that no player is guaranteed a permanent place in the Ghana national football team, popularly known as the Black Stars.
His comments come amid growing discussions about squad selection ahead of the FIFA World Cup, especially with reports suggesting that European-born players are reconsidering their international futures.
What Happened?
Afriyie stressed that national team selection must remain performance-based and entirely at the discretion of the head coach.
His remarks follow speculation that Callum Hudson-Odoi of Nottingham Forest F.C. and Eddie Nketiah of Crystal Palace F.C. could switch allegiance to Ghana after previously declining invitations.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Afriyie stated:
“Nobody is a permanent member of the Black Stars. The national team is there so that anytime a coach feels this player can help the cause of the Black Stars, he must go for him and nothing must stop him.”
The message is clear: selection must prioritize form, tactical fit, and national interest over past contributions.
Why It Matters for Ghana’s World Cup Plans
Ghana used 46 players during the World Cup qualifying campaign, but only 26 names can be submitted in the final tournament squad list before the June 1 deadline.
That reality means difficult decisions lie ahead.
Afriyie questioned the fairness of automatically prioritizing players who featured during qualifiers:
“Not all the players who played in the qualifiers can play in the World Cup, so are we also being fair to those players who played during the qualifiers but won’t be part of the World Cup?”
This highlights the delicate balance between loyalty and competitiveness — a recurring debate in international football.

With Ghana preparing for its fifth World Cup appearance, competition for places is intensifying.

Black Stars’ Group Stage Challenge
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside:
- Panama national football team
- England national football team
- Croatia national football team
Ghana’s group-stage schedule:
- 🗓 June 17 – vs Panama
- 🗓 June 23 – vs England
- 🗓 June 27 – vs Croatia
Facing European heavyweights England and Croatia means squad depth, tactical discipline, and experience will be crucial.
Preparations Ahead of the Tournament
As part of preparations, Ghana will regroup in March for international friendlies against:
- Austria national football team
- Germany national football team
The Black Stars will then conclude preparations with a final warm-up match against Mexico national football team in May.
The GFA has confirmed that the team will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the tournament.
This structured preparation schedule underlines Ghana’s ambition to compete strongly on the global stage.

What’s Next?
The final squad announcement before June 1 will be closely watched by fans and analysts.
With renewed interest from dual-nationality players and intense competition for limited spots, the selection process could spark further debate.
One thing is certain, as George Afriyie emphasized, no player’s place in the Black Stars is guaranteed.
Performance, commitment, and tactical fit will decide who represents Ghana at the World Cup.
