Cameroon part sack Marc Brys days before AFCON

Cameroon Football Federation part ways with Marc Brys days before AFCON after dropping Onana and Aboubakar

Cameroon have sacked manager Marc Brys less than a month before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations.
His dismissal was announced on the day of Cameroon’s squad announcement for the tournament, with Andre Onana among the list of notable absentees.

Brys was appointed as manager in April 2024, a decision that Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), tried to reverse.

The Belgian was removed from his position two months later following a heated argument with Eto’o, though he was reinstated two days later.

The pair endured a turbulent relationship, and days after his re-election, Eto’o and his executive committee announced Brys’ departure in a lengthy, dramatic statement.

Amid that statement came allegations of “subterfuge to evade his professional obligation to hold press conferences”, and accusations of “professional failure” from Brys, including “inciting” players to defy Fecafoot.

Cameroon failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, having lost to DR Congo in the play-offs last month.

And, Brys has now been replaced by one of his assistants, David Pagou, who named his 28-man squad for the upcoming AFCON in Morocco, which begins on December 21.

Bryan Mbeumo is included in the squad, but Onana, who is on loan from Manchester United at Trabzonspor, has not. He has made 10 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig since joining in September, keeping three clean sheets.

But he is one of the surprise omissions, with captain Vincent Aboubakar, Michael Ngadeu and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting also not named.

Cameroon will be without midfielder Frank Anguissa, who suffered a high-grade thigh injury while training with his national team in November.

Cameroon begin their AFCON campaign against Gabon on December 24, also facing Ivory Coast and Mozambique in Group F.
