Amorim: "We must be certain about January signings"

Ruben Amorim urges Manchester United to be certain about the players they will be bringing in when the window opens in January

Manchester United will look to the transfer market in January, but Ruben Amorim says they will only sign players who have the right personalities to succeed at the club.

The Red Devils are seventh in the Premier League table ahead of their meeting with Newcastle United, which will be the only top-flight fixture to take place on Boxing Day.

Having come under pressure earlier in the season, Amorim has overseen an upturn in United’s fortunes, with his team only losing twice in 11 games since the end of September.

Recent campaigns at Old Trafford have been characterised by poor performances from expensive recruits, with the likes of Antony and Rasmus Hojlund being shipped out since Amorim took charge last November.

And when it comes to strengthening their squad next month, Amorim will demand that United target players with the correct profiles.

“We have space to have more players, but it is a very important thing that we have a plan and we need to bring in players that we know,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

“It’s hard to know for sure that everything is going to work, but we need to be certain of the players that we bring in.

“If we are not sure, it’s better not to bring anyone in and to work with the players that we have. That is clear for me.

“Maybe I should be different, like so many managers, but that is my thinking and I think it’s the thinking of the board, that we cannot make the same mistakes we did in the past.”

Asked how he judged new signings, Amorim said: “I think I have a good feeling on that. That’s why we will not bring in a player that has not given me that feeling, face-to-face.

“I just look at the guy, maybe it’s the way they speak, and I think I can detect the rubbish. I don’t know.”

After their meeting with Newcastle, United round out 2025 at home to Wolves, who still have just two points on the board after 17 Premier League games.
