Pape Gueye inspires Senegal to a 3-1 comeback over Sudan in the round of 16 of the 2025 AFCON
The first of the round of 16 matches of the AFCON began with the Jediane Falcons of Sudan taking on the Teranga Lions of Senegal.
Sudan took an early lead through a well-placed shot from Aamir Abdallah in the 6th minute.
The Falcons’ dream of winning the AFCON to help bring peace and calm to their country seemed on course.
The Teranga Lions of Senegal, however, began roaring as they also chased an equalizer to help bring themselves back into the game.
After a series of attacks and knocks, the Senegalese got their breakthrough in the 29th minute through Pape Gueye as he happened to be at the end of Sadio Mane’s pass.
A swift counterattack from the 2021 AFCON champions was met by Nicolas Jackson as he beautifully assisted Pape Gueye to get his second goal of the game.
Gueye’s brace saw his name written in the history of Senegal football as he became the first Senegalese player to score a brace in the knockout stages of the AFCON.
PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye who replaced Ismaila Sarr in the 74th minute scored three minutes later after another quick counterattack to give the Senegalese a 3-1 lead over their Sudanese counterparts.
Senegal sails comfortably into the quarter finals as they await the winner of the Mali vs Senegal game.
