AFCON: Mo Salah inspires Egypt to a historic victory over South Africa

Egypt triumphs over South Africa as Mali stops Morocco’s winning streak at the 2025 AFCON

Match Day 2 of the ongoing 2025 AFCON in Morocco began with the Warriors of Zimbabwe on a wild hunt after the Antelopes of Angola.

With no points each from their previous matches, both teams were on the chase for their first win of the tournament.

Having both lost 2-1 to South Africa and Egypt respectively, Angola had the upper hand in the early stages of the game and they crowned it with a beautiful goal by Gelson Dala in the 24th minute.

With their AFCON dream slipping away, he Warriors of Zimbabwe, who started the game sitting deep in their half, had no option but to come out attacking against Angola as they chased an equalizer.

Former Anderlecht forward Knowledge Musona gave everyone reasons to believe that class is always permanent when he took the bull by the horns and slotted home from close range to draw the Zimbabwens level.

The game finished in a one-all stalemate as they both have a game in hand to determine their fate in the tournament.

The second game of the tournament saw the Kings of African football take on the boys boys of African football in a fiercely contested encounter.

The Pharaohs of Egypt were chasing their first win over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa since 2006.

Khuliso Mudau allowed Egypt to take the lead after a slap to Mo Salah’s face in the penalty box.

As trusted as he is, Mo Salah took up the responsibility and placed the right in the middle, with Ronwan Williams diving to his left.

With some minutes left to end the first half, Al Ahly’s Mohamed Hany took an early shower as he was shown his second yellow card of the game also giving the South Africans some hope going to half time.

In a game where suspense, drama, rivalry, and aggression were displayed, Mo Salah’s first-half goal was good enough to help Egypt get their first win over South Africa since 2006.

Zambia took on Comoros in the third game of the day. With limited attempts at attacks, the game lacked the intensity and suspense that a lot of people hoped to see.

The game ended in a goalless draw which leaves Zambia with 2 points from two games and Comoros also with just a point from two games.

Morocco versus Mali happened to be the last game of the day and it lived up to the hype that surrounded the game.

With Kylian Mbappe in the stands to support his friend Achraf Hakimi, you can only imagine that the Atlas Lions of Morocco were definitely going to roar as loudly as the Eagles of Mali would also like to fly.

Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz gave the Moroccans the lead in the first half from the penalty spot after the referee awarded a penalty against Nathan Gassama for handling the ball in the 18-yard box.

Mali also drew level in the second half from the penalty spot after Nayef Aguerd brought down Sinayoko in the 18-yard box area in an attempt to stop a threatening counterattack from the Malians.

For the first time since March 2024, Morocco failed to win an international football match and this was made possible by the Eagles of Mali
