Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has promised that the good days are yet to come for the club
Ruben Amorim vowed that “the good days are coming” for Manchester United after finishing their “disaster” season.
Man Utd earned a final-day 2-0 victory over 10-man Aston Villa to snap a nine-match winless streak in the Premier League (drawn two, lost seven) and bounce back from their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in midweek.
The Red Devils finished 15th in the table, their worst-ever Premier League position, with 42 points.
However, United have won their final Premier League match of the season for the 23rd time, with only Arsenal doing so more often (24).
The hosts dominated throughout at Old Trafford, with their 10 shots on target their most ever in a Premier League match under Amorim.
Ruben Amorim apologised to the home fans at full-time, before promising his team will improve.
“First of all, I want to apologise for this season. I am really disappointed with the team,” Amorim said on the pitch.
“Secondly, I want to say thank you. We are very grateful for your support over the season. I know it was very hard in many games.
“Now, we have to make a choice. Do we get stuck in the past, because this season is in the past, it is over? We fight each other, or we stick together and move forward, Amorim said
“Six months ago, I said the storm is coming. Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you that the good days are coming.
“If there is one club in the world that has proved in the past that they can overcome any situation or disaster, it is our club. It is Manchester United football club. Thank you very much – see you next season.”
Amad Diallo opened the scoring before Christian Eriksen converted an 87th-minute penalty to mark his final match for the club with a goal.
He is one of three departures, along with Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof, that the club confirmed following the final whistle.
Eriksen made 107 appearances across all competitions, with his goal against Villa his eighth for United in his three-year spell after joining on a free transfer.
“It’s the best way possible with the season in mind. It was good to finish off with a bit of a smile on people’s faces, and give something back to the fans,” the midfielder told BBC Match of the Day.
“On the pitch, Bruno [Fernandes] was asking if I was going to take the penalty. I said no and that I’ll give it to Jonny [Evans]. But Jonny didn’t want to take it.
“It was a nice gesture. Bruno is the number one, and he decides. And luckily, he gave it to me today. It was a good way to see it off.
“Wednesday [losing the Europa League final]was a big blow. To lose a final is never nice. But we showed character to bounce back and finish the season with a smile, and to give something to us and the fans.”
Speaking on his spell with the club, he added: “My time here has been really special. There has been some good moments and bad moments. I like the pressure to be able to play for a club like United. It’s been a special three years.
“The next chapter starts with a bit of a holiday and then going with the national team, and then another holiday. Then, we will see where we are going to play football.”
